There’s a new name on the rink in Amherstview and it’s Brookland Homes. As of January 5, 2026, our name is proudly on the wall of the arena at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre at 322 Amherst Drive. Loyalist Township signed off on a 10-year naming rights agreement with Brookland Homes and our president, John Armitage, who backed it with a $400,000 donation to the recreation centre’s renewal project.
Amherstview isn’t really a suburb of Kingston as much as it is its own small town, a short drive down the road with its own community and charm. People move here for the waterfront, the scenery, the community, and the quiet. A rink where that entire community can gather for minor hockey, public skating, and more fits that lifestyle better than any billboard could.
We have been building in Eastern Ontario for over 50 years and along the way we discovered a community isn’t just streets full of houses. A community is where people gather, where kids learn to skate, where sports dreams are born, and where you meet your friends and neighbours.
The ice surface measures 200 feet by 85 feet while holding up to 1000 people plus a canteen for those post-game treats. Come summertime, the ice is removed and the floor is used for ball hockey and lacrosse with special events also happening in the space during this time. Loyalist Township handles rentals and bookings directly and you can look up ice times and skating schedules on the township’s website.
It could be early morning practice or a weekend tournament with excited players getting ready to take the ice with their families watching from the stands while chatting with neighbours and parents. That’s a community and that’s Amherstview. This is what Brookland Homes has been striving to foster and build for decades. Loyalist Township was looking for assistance to revitalize the W.J. Recreation Centre, and we had the means and motive to help. We look forward to continuing to build and grow alongside the wonderful people of the Amherstview community.
A 10-year deal is a lot longer than it sounds. Some of the little ones wobbling around and just learning to skate are going to be seasoned veterans by the time our agreement is up and we plan on being around the whole way. Still building homes in Amherstview and still helping to foster a strong sense of community for those living there.
